Valhalla Consulting recognises the importance of the Open Source community to businesses and individuals throughout the world. Open Source and public licence software has developed over the years to the point where mature products exist as genuine (and free) alternatives. The following is a brief list of the software that Valhalla Consulting uses and recommends.
- Alfresco Enterprise Content Management System - an open source Document Management System allowing companies to centrally store documents in a document repository. At its simplest, Alfresco provides version control and check-out/check-in functionality. Business rules can be configured to add to this base functionality, to streamline (and partially automate) the whole document authoring, review and approval lifecycle. Documents are available from a web browser front end. Different user security settings can be configured to hide documents from view, allow read only access, or allow write access.
- Joomla! - an open source Content Management System for feature-rich website development. An active community supports Joomla!, providing a multitude of possibilities.
- Lupo PenSuite - a portable application launcher complete with most of the free and portable applications that a mobile IT professional needs to carry out their work.
- LyX - an open source document processor combining the power of LaTeX with a graphical interface. This is particularly useful for university students, scientists and mathematicians writing technical papers and theses, as they often use the LaTeX document markup language for typesetting. LaTeX is a powerful way of separating content from presentation.
